Gardens That Grow on Walls
GIVEN the chance to accompany a team of botanists on a plant-collecting expedition to South America, most gardeners would probably be satisfied with the experience. They wouldn’t come home and try to recreate the rain forest in Manhattan.
Multimedia
But Michael Riley isn’t like most gardeners. Mr. Riley, a former commodities trader turned plant expert who went on to become assistant director of the Horticultural Society of New York, was eager to move beyond potted plants in a way that hadn’t yet occurred to many others. It took a number of expeditions, a lot of research and more than a decade and a half, but by 2003 he had figured out how to grow a wall of plants inside his Upper West Side apartment.
“In the rain forest, I realized that plants didn’t need to grow in pots with labels,” said Mr. Riley, 64. “I wanted to grow plants in ways that were natural to them.”
With his partner, Francisco Correa, a Spanish teacher who is now 52, Mr. Riley attacked a corner of his living area, stripping the walls of plaster and affixing exterior-grade plywood to new and existing building studs. On top of the plywood went bitumen roofing to protect the walls. Cork bark was then stapled over that, and plants were inserted into pockets in the cork. Sprinklers and lighting were installed overhead, trenches were put in at the base of the walls to catch water that trickled down, and pools were added in the middle of the room to increase humidity.
These days, Mr. Riley’s project isn’t that unusual. Vertical gardens — which began as an experiment in 1988 by Patrick Blanc, a French botanist intent on creating a garden without dirt — are becoming increasingly popular at home. Avid and aspiring gardeners, frustrated with little outdoor space, are taking another look at their walls and noticing something new: more space. And a number of companies are selling ready-made systems and all-in-one kits for gardeners like Mr. Riley who want to do it themselves. (For those who prefer to leave it to the professionals, landscape designers can build vertical gardens for a hefty fee.)
In the last few years, companies that sell green wall supplies have seen a jump in sales. ELT, an Ontario company that specializes in green roofs, began selling living wall systems a little over three years ago and is now one of the biggest suppliers to the United States. Greg Garner, the company’s president, said that its green-wall sales have increased 300 percent since 2008. Four months ago, the company introduced a cheaper, lighter kit to make living walls accessible to the average gardener; prices start at about $40 for a one-square-foot panel.
“We’ve turned living walls into something anyone can do,” Mr. Garner said. “The walls have gone from zero percent of our business leads to 80 percent of our business, and it’s happening all over the place, from the Middle East to North America to Europe.”
Another big living-wall company, Gsky Plant Systems in Vancouver, British Columbia, was founded four years ago as a green roof supplier but now focuses almost exclusively on vertical gardens, which it designs, installs and maintains for around $125 a square foot. Hal Thorne, Gsky’s chairman, said the company’s growth in the last year “was phenomenal — we nearly doubled sales.”
Many of the modular systems — essentially plastic trays filled with dirt and attached to a wall, with a sprinkler or drip irrigation system installed above — differ dramatically from Patrick Blanc’s living walls, which can be seen in commercial and institutional buildings around the world, including the Athenaeum hotel in London and the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.
Mr. Blanc, who was inspired by tropical rain-forest plants he had studied, knew plants could survive on water and fertilizer alone, and developed a system for growing them on walls lined with felt. The living wall was part of his effort to bring greenery into cities. “When you live in towns, you don’t always go into gardens,” he said. “It’s really important to use empty spaces to invite nature into town.” Calligraphy

Drug plant inspection schedule accelerated
The drug manufacturing plant responsible for an international recall of children's Tylenol and other medicines has been on a stepped-up inspection schedule by federal regulators since 2008.
The McNeil Consumer Healthcare plant in Fort Washington, Pa., has been inspected annually since 2008, says Douglas Stearn, an assistant director for compliance at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
On average, because of limited resources, the FDA inspects domestic drug plants only about once every two to three years, Stearn said. The agency uses a risk-based system to set inspection schedules. Plants making drugs with greater safety risks, such as blood thinners, are inspected more frequently, as are plants that have a more troubled inspection history.
"There had been issues raised in these past inspections," Stearn said. Some involved manufacturing, he said, but he couldn't say whether that was the reason for the increased frequency.
The FDA and McNeil have declined to release reports of inspections before the one in April that triggered last week's wide-ranging recall.
FDA: Drug maker knew of contamination
A congressional oversight committee called on the FDA Thursday to produce those records and others by May 17 as part of its investigation into what they called "alarming" problems the FDA found in April, especially the use of a bacteria-contaminated ingredient to make medicine. USA TODAY has asked for the release of recent inspections reports since Sunday.
The recall of infant's and children's liquid Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl products is the third recall in recent months involving McNeil plants, note Reps. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., and Darrell Issa, R-Calif., in their letter requesting documents from the FDA. Towns chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform; Issa is its top Republican member.
This raises "questions as to the adequacy of FDA's response to repeated problems with McNeil's manufacturing practices," the lawmakers wrote.
McNeil spokesman Marc Boston said the company is addressing the "unacceptable" quality issues the FDA has flagged.
The chance of serious harm is "remote" from drugs in the recall, according to the FDA. In late January, the FDA was at the plant investigating a complaint, but Stearn could not provide details. Before last month, the plant had full inspections in October 2006, February 2008 and May 2009, he said.
Stearn said it's the drugmakers' responsibility to maintain the strength, quality and purity of their medicines. "We try to ensure that that obligation is met," he said.
If it isn't, said Sidney Wolfe at the watchdog group Public Citizen, the FDA must take action: "If (the plants) fail in that responsibility, something drastic should happen."Wild horser

Transmission Characteristics
With the progress of socialist modernization construction in China, the development of marine resources has increasingly attracted attention. On marine projects, people care about shines down to us what happens in some location. But if you can not determine the location of the sensor in the base station, the information collected is not practical significance. Greater too than you can describe. It is necessary to study the position of the base station, which are constructed by the wireless sensor network. In addition, because the complex and changeable marine environment are affected by the undeniable, waves, tides and weather and other factors, the location of the buoy base station have to change at any time. While, there are the close relation to the change of their position and the reconstruction of information in space-time. So the issue how accurately the location of base station positioning is this world is not merely a bad joke necessary to be resolved.First, this article introduced the basic principles and overall structure of the self-positioning system in the floating base station. And then the encoding and transmission of positioning signal have been designed. On this basis the core of the self-positioning system, acoustic positioning signals to send and receive system, has been designed. In this system, it can complete self-positioning of base stations in frequency division multiplexing mode, by the principle of waveform memory. And the meaningless system can send the signal in code division multiplexing mode in theory, so it has a certain expansion of capacity. When the analysis of positioning signal have been done, a data processing method has been presented, which is based on sampling point difference, and the experiments show that the approach can be higher positioning accuracy. Finally, the overall system is tested in the river. The experiments have proved that the floating base station can be located by itself completely and, by using the positioning system designed in the paper. It can achieve the distance which is 200 meters times 200 meters, and the data processing program presented in the paper can control the positioning accuracy of less than 0.2 milliseconds. The position system have low power and high precision features, and it make the system would occupy a significant position in the marine environment observation, resource exploration and underwater communication.

The Student Pulse asks about health
Last Spring, 12 students committed suicide in Wuhan, Hubei, prompting the Chinese Education Department to organize a meeting of educators and Communist Party officials from 81 universities to discuss the rising tide of suicides by university students in China.
The Wuhan incident is not isolated; it is among a rash of suicides by Whatever happens, happens for a reason Chinese students recently reported by the media. One of these reports came from China’s capital, where a third-year law student at true friends Beijing University hung himself from the gateway to a world a tree at Fragrant Mountain, a park outside of the city. A Beijing Forestry University student is said to have hung himself just two days later.
Compared to most industrialized countries, the suicide rate among Chinese students is not alarmingly high, but a closer look at the statistics reveals a recent spike in the rate. It’s this spike that has prompted education officials to address the problem.
While WZU(Discovery) school authority has put much more emphasis on students, for instance, psychological counseling center has been put online, a series of lectures have been hold. In order to get more information on our campus, the DXC has focused much more on students’ health and many students have been involved.
This issue’s Pulse Survey of Da Xue Crossing (catching a glimpse of a light) probed student health on campus, including students’ physical and psychological health. The DXC Pulse Survey randomly sampled the opinions of 700 students campus wide,10 percent of the student body, by the questionnaires we’d offered, then we collected all of the questionnaires back, and did the statistics within two days. All the 14 colleges were represented in the survey. This is considered as an accurate and representative sample. The survey reveals that students may not be comfortable seeking help from their parents for psychological difficulties. Asked whom they would consult for help, 41 percent of students say their peers, 18 percent say they would seek professional help off campus, 16 percent would choose their family, 12 percent would consult no one at all, and 13 percent say they would choose other options.
Chinese sociologists and psychologists have put forth several explanations, including pressure to succeed at university, a competitive labor market, tuition costs, the high expectations of parents, and failed relationships.
Many, however, suggest the root problem is the rapid change taking place in Chinese society. Traditional social values are clashing with the tide of modernization, and leaving students with a conflicting sense of self and place.
The survey’s results show some complains in students, and we hope they could tackle these complaints in a proper way and our school authorities could make great efforts to help us.

Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks
Signal processing system of underwater acoustic sensor networks is an important part of the underwater explosion efficacy parameters testing system. The article is the design of signal processing system of underwater acoustic sensor networks based on Visual C++ 6.0 according to efficiency parameter testing system, which is the Beauty is Meaningless platform of signal analyzing, Cheap Lacoste Polo Shirts processing and positioning. It regards compression, decompression, coding cheap nike shoes and decoding method of underwater acoustic signal as the key research object. And the software of signal processing system of underwater acoustic sensor networks has been designed. The paper firstly has analyzed the characteristic of underwater acoustic signal, and then applies wavelet packet transform cheap Wholesale nike shoes and the improved threshold principle to underwater acoustic signal compression. What has been principally discussed is how to select wavelet packet, a world in a grain of sand wavelet packet decompression, the improved threshold principle. Finally, this algorithm is verified by underwater acoustic signal acquired though experiments. The result shows the algorithm could compress the water acoustical signal effectively.Buy cheap nike shoes In order to accurately separate the information that each station transmits, the paper has also studies the algorithm of encoding and decoding of underwater acoustic signal, which has adopted the Hold infinity code division chi hair straightener multiple access mode. The mode can counter multi-path interference effectively. According to the frequency range of hydrophone and figure of stations, PN code of n=5 have been chosen as address of a station, and the codes which relevant function value are smaller after shifted have been chosen touches your heart as the address of others stations. Then, the thesis has introduced PN code capturing and decoding algorithms in detail. At last, do Make youself a better person the simulation of coding and decoding in MATLAB, and address code is produced at random by the computer for three stations. The result shows that synchronism of PN code is very accurate and the decoding accuracy is high.

the punctuation of your face
is all to telling.
the lifted eyebrows held as hyphens
the dropped tongue coma..
the misplaced earlobed parenthesis
collums from round your throat form
the strangely pronouced emotion.
the semicolon half grin creates
a harbor for vessels in the viens
to carry strait to the heart the
formless expressions.
the joy of seeing you smile
illimuminates me.
and the silence between
us grows beautiful once more.

A prose dedicated to the post 80s like me..
Ever exclaimed time fleeted? Ever found it a hard struggle to merge into a world of sophistication? Ever doubted the meaningfulness of life and work? Ever… Yes. As what it is believed that we are a blessed generation, the overwhelming majority of us have enjoyed unshared care and attention in a family with the one-child policy. Yet, it is surely a tunnel vision about the post 80s, the so-called in the eyes of most seniors’ a spoiled and disobedient generation What about your idea as one of the post 80s? Materially speaking, I do believe that we enjoy unprecedented abundance, despite the fact that I was not from a well-off family. With years of study and teachers’ inculcation, I grew from an ignorant boy to a traditionally-considered an egghead after untold narrow victories against the trial educational reforms like most of my peers. Not even having time to enjoy the “brave new world” after the survival of the entrance exam, four years of college life, the prime time of a person’s life, with its honor and regret became a part of the good old days which we can never retrieve. On entering the society, I took a tumble that everything I used to believe was not practically possible, which I partially lay the blame on my maverick personality and ways of act. My as-you-sow-so-will-you-reap conviction vanished into thin air against the harsh reality. However, thankfully deep down inside, I was not born a loafer and never a member of the NEET group. I did and now I am doing what I can to colorize my life by gaining not only financial satiation but also a sense of achievement and recognition, along the way of which I am spiritually inspired by the lines in the famous movie The Pursuit of Happiness: You got a dream, you gotta protect it; people can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it; if you want something, go get it. Yes, I do want something and I am ready to get it despite the prospective difficulties.
Voice of Amity
You, coming into my vision,
enthused me with magic potion;
voice of ours flew with lovely wings,
with your tone as sweet strummed strings.
Proximity’s just at the very onset
as a cure for my lone mindset.
I foresee if I'm allowed to,
amity is bound to ensue.
A great rewarding may it be
for both of us ~like you and me,
friendship of worth so scarce and rare,
be nurtured with our dual care.

Renew your life!Change Up the Routine
Abraham Joshua Heschel was one of the leading American Rabbis, theologians, and social activists of the 20th century. He said something that I’ll never forget and that has stayed with me since the moment I heard it. In his book God in Search of Man, he wrote, “Life is routine and routine is resistance to wonder.”
There's a true story of a man I have worked with who has spent his entire life believing that his ears were not symmetrical and therefore sunglasses always looked crooked on his face. He came to accept this over time, until he came in touch with mindfulness practice.
One day as he was standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom he chose to take a moment to come down from his busy mind, become present, and really look at himself. What he noticed was astonishing.
He suddenly realized that he had not been standing straight and that one shoulder was slightly lower than the other. In that moment, he chose to stand up straight and low and behold his eyeglasses were no longer crooked on his face. All this time he thought his face was lopsided in some way when in effect, it was his posture.
This story is just a metaphor for the rest of us in our lives. Over time, what do we just get used to and learn to accept that keeps us limited in how we see things? What in our lives has become routine to a point that we have lost our sense of wonder in this world?
When dealing with a myriad of mental health conditions (e.g., stress, anxiety, depression, or addiction), we get stuck in routine ways of reacting to things. A challenge may arise and the automatic reaction is “who cares, I’ll never succeed anyway.” As we become accustomed to this, it can be likened to unknowingly walking around with crooked posture. Once we become aware of it, we can begin the process of straightening ourselves out.
It's a worthy question to explore: What do you notice in your life that's routine?
Do you watch TV every night? Do you take the same route to work every day? If you are in a relationship, do you sleep on the same side of the bed night after night or does only one of you cook the meals or clean? Do you often shoot down new ideas? Do you react to stress or pain with routine avoidance? Is this routine taking away the wonder in everyday life?”
To do: Pick one thing from your “routine list” and choose to begin becoming aware of it and switching it up.
